So, it's been awhile since I have posted about house redecorating. We have been buying more things, but today I started another big project. I started removing wallpaper from the walls of our master bathroom. I don't know what it is with Texas and wallpaper. Yuck. The stuff in our bathroom isn't offensive but it was annoying. The wallpaper was one sort of swirly light brown and the tile in there is another sort of swirly brown. So, taking some lessons from HGTV, I got a wallpaper scorer, some fabric softener and a wallpaper scraper. Then it was like watching a sweater unraveling. I couldn't stop myself. It has been coming off pretty easily. My biggest problem is that I am worried about falling again. I know you don't want to see any more pictures of my bruises and my ankle and behind still haven't recovered.
I am not sure what color we are going to paint in there. We also have to texture the walls, which ought to be interesting. Any suggestions?
I am glad I got to share my story with you guys. You are right, there were a lot more things that happened in that time. I had a few problems, that thankfully, Fiona has avoided. I got a bleeding ulcer, did you know when you throw up blood sometimes it looks like coffee grounds? Or during the second of nasty stuff when I got hospitalized, my brother hurt himself at the babysitters and we ended up sharing a hospital room on my parents' 14th wedding anniversary. He is not the most patient patient. I was nauseous out of my mind and he was ordering food to get his IV out (he remains terrified of needles). But I survived and it certainly gave me the tools to successfully help Fiona and make life easier for her. It certainly made me more comfortable in hospitals.

I have never used the spray texture but a friend did and it turned out perfectly. You can buy it at a hardware store and it's in a spraypaint type can. Let me know if it works for you!
I wouldn't use the spray texture for an entire room. The cans are easy, but that would be pretty expensive. Consider finding someone to do it, it will be fast, easy and not too expensive.
How fun to redecorate - and how stressful!
I'd hire it out as well. That way if it doesn't turn out just exactly perfect, you have someone to blame for it!
Oh boy do I have experience in this area! We just finished a major remodel which involved lots of drywall and texturing. The guy at Home Depot recommended a textured roller and a can of texture paint. I tried that and the roller made a huge mess so I scrapped that. I finished with a regular roller and it's nearly impossible to get the same effect with a brush for corners and edging. Plus it's very textured (ie - scratchy).
For our next room we tried the spray cans. They work great but it takes a LOT of cans and it's very smelly. Wear a good quality mask, gloves and open lots of windows.
We also hired professionals to drywall and texture a couple walls with 30' ceilings. This of course was the easiest but certainly not the cheapest.
You can rent a hopper and do it yourself the professional way. It would require lots of prep work to cover the things you don't want textured.
Bottom line? Each method has pro's and con's. Pick the combo of mess/smell/expense that works best for you. (This is probably more advice than your ever wanted!)
I have taken off wallpaper with a rented steamer, a scorer, elbow grease and fabric softener. By far just spraying with the fabric softener, letting it set and scraping was the fastest and easiest. I hope you're finding the same thing.
And thanks for sharing your story. I hope to continue to learn more about what has formed you into the wonderful person you are today.
Do you have to texture because the rest of your house is textured? I'm just asking because personally I prefer smooth walls and have been known to hire a dry-waller to fix un-smooth ones. You didn't say much about color choices -- do you have some ideas yet? I love taking off wallpaper -- it's a pain, but it just feels so good to get the hideous stuff off!
I think we might go with the spray can. It's the master bathroom, so there really isn't a lot of wall space. It just seems that way when I am trying to remove the wallpaper. Some of it came off so easily! Others have taken some severe scraping. Hubby likes the look of the textured wall and it does make it easier to paint over imperfections. We don't need a lot of texture, just a big. Thanks for all of the advice.
