So, Fiona and I were watching Harry Potter this afternoon. When hubby and I turned off the DVD player the cable was set to Noggin. Apparently this channel becomes the N channel after 3pm our time. We then saw a preview for a show that is on this particular network. It showed kids making out, including 2 girls kissing each other scenes!
What kind of message is this to send to young kids? While the debate rages on about homosexuality and nature versus nurture, I think things are confusing enough to young kids. My girls don't know that people of the same sex sometimes like each other and I don't want to have to explain things to them.
Thank heavens for the digital box. I had already gone through and locked out all channels that might have questionable things on them, but I didn't know that I would have to screen the kids' channels so intently as well. I was already concerned about things they may be watching that would give them ideas. I was able to lockout specific shows as well.
We had originally turned off our cable when Fiona was 1 and a half and Buttercup was 4. When the doc gave us the news that we would be spending fall, winter and part of spring housebound, I figured we would need some extra channels for company. We have really enjoyed it, especially the Food Network. But the commercials are intrusive and now with this new irritation, we will probably have to review our cable selections again.

You should just TiVo everything -- no commercials, and you could pre-select what the girls can watch. I've made it pretty clear to my kids that I'm in charge of the remote control, and so far, that's worked pretty well for us. Our younger kids havce always mainly watched videos and DVDs -- they like to watch the same thing over and over again anyway, and it makes it easier to turn the TV off when it's over.
