Can it really be an ode if I'm not the biggest fan? I am a severe disappointment to my children. I admitted that Halloween isn't my favorite holiday(Christmas) or even my next favorite holiday (Easter) or even the one after that (Thanksgiving)...oh come on, what other holiday includes pie? Or maybe I should eat more pie throughout the year. Anyway, Buttercup insists that Halloween is her second favorite holiday and she insists I give it more attention.
Maybe it's from my childhood. We didn't have much money and our costumes were something like clowns, my mom sewed the costumes, or gypsies, which really only needed a bandanna, costume jewelry, and all included make up. I am not the biggest fan of make up. Greasy, oily, gross stuff. I still don't wear that much. Then, after we wandered around, being herded by my dad, we got to pick through the candy, check for those infamous razor blades and then have two pieces. It then went into the communal cookie jar where everyone got one piece after dinner for the next few weeks. It's amazing how quickly at least 6 kids can get through piles of candy. Of course, I should probably admit that I can remove the glass top of the cookie jar, take out whatever I want, and then put it down without the telltale chink.
My mom got into Halloween after I left and decorates thoroughly every October 1st. Moe says, she would even get doughnuts and apple juice for them to eat for an after school snack, while they admired the decorations. Moe insisted that we do a bit more for Halloween since she now lives here too. We spent several hours yesterday putting window clings, wall clings, replacing regular candlesticks with Halloween colored ones, hanging things, hearth huggers, etc. The girls were wildly surprised and excited. We now have to find the perfect costumes. I have the cutest Strawberry Shortcake outfit for Fiona. She has the best curls and freckles. They also want to be Hannah Montana and her best friend.

I feel the exact same way about Halloween as you do (did?) and people always give me a hard time about it. "But you get to dress up! It's fun!" Glad to see someone else feels the same
The razor blade comment made me smile, I so remember looking for those ;) I like Halloween, but I don't usually dress up. I put on a Halloween t-shirt and call it a day. But the candy...a definite plus, right? ha
I'm neutral on Halloween. I can take it or leave it. Mostly I'm stressing myself out trying to find a unique costume for the kiddo that he'll likely never wear because he's 9 months old and home with his dad. Oh the unnecessary stress I place on myself!!!
I am not bashful in the least about my loathing of the "holiday". Kids running around begging for candy, skeletons and scary gross decorations and the overall evil theme.
I do help my kids figure out a cute, non-scary costume, let them trick-or-treat for about an hour and hand out candy at our own house.
My decorations are limited to a fall theme that can be left up until replaced with Christmas/winter decor.
Isn't it funny that we all had to search for the razor blades or suspicous candy and if the wrapper had fallen off - it was thrown out as well.
In our small town we had some culture shock to deal with. Like the older people wanting the kids to come inside the door and visit for a minute before leaving. And the kids can actually go door-to-door. A practice that was forbidden when we lived in the city.
I think I may have to do a Halloween post - I have even more to say!!
Maybe I shouldn't admit it but halloween is my favorite. I think it is mostly because it is the first autumn holiday and Autumn is also my favorite. I don't do the gorry stuff but I really enjoy the kids excitement and antisipation over a holiday since the last one they noticed was the 4th of July. Both Gary and I dress-up. Mostly due to the kids expectaions and begging. Gary usually does something creepy and I do something silly. It's fun! Especailly for the little goblins.
I had to get a costume last year. Being back in the classroom kind of required it. So I bought an astronaut costume and now I am good until retirement. It helps that we study space.
I like the cute Halloween stuff. And I always go overboard making the boys costumes.
