Conflicted

So, you know how I wax on about the joys I find in working out, especially at my local Y. I feel like everyone should have an exercise that makes them happy and gives them an outlet. I just have one question, " Why does it have to start January 1st and be at my Y?" Seriously. Of course, it's not just this YMCA, we noticed it back in Portland. What happens is that people get their New Years resolutions going and join the Y in early January. Then they clog up my usual haunts. They go strong through the middle of February and then disappear until the last weeks of March. Then they go for a couple of weeks, only to disappear for the rest of the year and have it start all over again in January.
It's much worse this year because our Y has been doing some renovations and if you build it, they will come. They had an open house the Saturday and it was insane! Of course, it's good for my dues that a lot of people join and then don't actually use the facility.
I went to Zumba on Friday and there were twice as many people as usual and it's a crowded class to begin with. It's not as much fun for me to go to a class and trip over a ton of people who have no idea what they are doing.
So... this is where I'm conflicted. I love exercising, I love that it keeps my chronic pain and illness in check and helps me not to gain weight, even while I enjoy my Christmas goodies. I want everyone to be healthy and enjoy getting there. Plus, you have to start somewhere and I didn't know what I was doing when I first started my classes.
I guess my thoughts are that you should exercise and find something you enjoy doing, but start when you feel unhealthy, not with the hordes in January. I think that might have something to do with people stopping. It's hard to figure things out when no one else knows what they are doing and people are taking up the trainers time. I think September is a much better time, especially for Moms because it's easier to start a routine in September when your kids go back to school and you don't have to figure out childcare for the school aged kids.
Oh and don't come to my Y. I hate starting out my workout with a 1/2 mile jog to the front door from my car.

When I went to the gym regularly, I took Jan 1-Feb 14 off. In lieu I worked out at home to exercise videos. Now that's all I do. It's so nice to just toss on anything, walk a few steps and get in a workout. Comcast On Demand has several free workouts from Exercise TV so I'm sure other cable providers have something similar as well.

I think I am a very competitive person. I actually push myself harder when there are other people around. Plus, I hardly get out, so I think I need the social aspect and if there is a teacher I am more likely not to leave early.
It's nice that you only have yourself to 'clog' up the workout area, LOL.
